CNN —The Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday that after reviewing Boeing’s instructions for inspecting grounded 737 Max 9 planes, it has decided to seek more information before allowing the plan to proceed. One hundred and seventy-one of the planes remain grounded in the United States as airlines Alaska and United await updated emergency inspection guidance from the FAA. The FAA said it plans to collect data from the inspection of 40 of the planes using Boeing’s procedures before deciding whether the process will work for the rest of the grounded planes. It’s unclear whether the 40 planes will come from the Alaska Airlines fleet or the United Airlines fleet – the two airlines that fly this model of aircraft – or both. The agency’s latest move comes as the FAA also plans to audit the Boeing 737 Max 9 production line and its suppliers, with a focus on ensuring quality control.

CNN —Sunday’s announcement of the four teams selected for the College Football Playoff sent shockwaves through the sport. Instead of folding, Florida State rallied, coming from behind on the road to defeat Florida in Gainesville with backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker. With the selection, the Crimson Tide will make its eighth appearance in the College Football Playoff, the most of any team. Speaking on ESPN on Sunday, College Football Playoff committee chair Boo Corrigan explained why FSU was left out of the top four. It renders the season up to yesterday irrelevant and significantly damages the legitimacy of the College Football Playoff.

According to Ad Age, in 2022 the Progressive Corporation spent more than $2 billion on advertising in the United States, pouring more money into the effort than McDonald’s, Toyota or Coca-Cola. (The insurance industry’s total annual media-ad spending is estimated to be just shy of $11 billion — more than was spent by all the top beer brands combined.) It is an interminable folk tale about buying insurance, propelled by the charisma, or connoted soothing attentiveness, or gently grating peskiness, or something, of Flo, its central character. Flo debuted in 2008, working the checkout of an eldritch white store uncannily devoid of shadows or edges. CNN —The White House denounced Fox News on Friday, blasting the right-wing network for “standing up on behalf of hate” after one of its hosts attacked the Jewish heritage of two CNN anchors over their coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. “Lying to insult the pain that families suffered in the Holocaust has absolutely no place in America. But Levin stood by his comments Thursday night while responding to CNN’s condemnation of his remarks. As Israel’s assault on Gaza unfolds, global pressure is mounting for a pause in the fighting, including Monday at the United Nations. Washington CNN —J. Michael Luttig, a conservative retired federal judge and key adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence, declared on Wednesday that “there is no Republican Party” and said former President Donald Trump is even more dangerous than he was in the aftermath of the 2020 election. Today, there is no such shared set of beliefs and values and principles or even policy views as within the Republican Party for America,” he said on Wednesday. Luttig also sought to shoot down possible legal defenses that Trump could mount to address the federal charges to which he has pleaded not guilty. Trump ally and attorney John Eastman, who drafted the point-by-point memo claiming Pence could stop the certification on January 6, was also a clerk for Luttig. Pence relied on Luttig’s guidance when he decided to defy Trump and certify the results of the election on January 6.
